Pricing
Absorb the EU €3 duty, or pass it on?
The duty is small per parcel but adds up, especially for shops with low average order values. Here are your options.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Absorb it | High-margin items, few EU orders | On a €20 order, €3 is 15% of revenue |
| EU handling line at checkout | Transparency; easy to change later | Some buyers dislike surprise fees, so show it early |
| Raise EU prices | Clean checkout | Needs market-specific pricing (Shopify Markets, separate Etsy pricing is limited) |
| Collect duties at checkout (DDP) | Avoiding refused parcels | Requires a duties-at-checkout setup or Managed Markets |
| Let the buyer pay at delivery (DAP) | Nothing to set up | Carrier fees on top, refusals, bad reviews |
The math
Average duty per EU order = €3 × average number of different item types per order. A shop averaging 1.5 item types pays about €4.50 per EU order. Adding €5 to EU orders, or roughly €2–3 per item to EU prices, keeps margin flat.
Your real number depends on your mix, which is why DutyReady calculates it from your actual orders export.
